Folk Art Articulated Figures at the recent Slotin Auction

For anyone that knows me, you know that I have a keen interest in collecting folk art articulated figures. A large number of them just sold at the recent Slotin auction, formerly from the David Wise America Collection, who apparently had as many folk art figures as collector Robert Greenberg, although, in my mind, not at the same level in quality.


Probably the best of the lot was this figure, which has a great folky look to the face, nice detailing to the articulated joints and a relatively large size at 16" tall. It sold for $ 750.00.

19th Century African American Folk Art Limberjack

Nice 19th century folk art carved limberjack I recently got on eBay. Quality ones like this are getting so damn hard to find these days. I'd say that only 2-3 really nice ones have shown up on eBay all year. Well, needless to say, I paid a lot (for me) for this, but it was a hell of a lot cheaper than what something like this would bring at auction these days.

19thc. wood carved jointed figure or limberjack. Measures 18 in. long 4 and a half in. wide and 2 and a half in. thick. Lower legs have been replaced at a later date.

Finally unpacking...

The full home remodel is winding down and it's finally time to unpack part of the collection. Here's a few shots of some articulated figures. Still not sure where they are going to go, but probably want to display them on multiple shelves for a nice group effect. Some I'll probably have to sell too, which is a bummer. I can't tell you how hard it is to sell a great 19th century articulated figure so that I can pay for something like a towel bar! Ugh!

RARE Old Photo of Anonymous Carver of Articulated Figures

Came upon this extremely rare glass negative of an anonymous folk artist with his articulated figures. Finding the original figures is hard enough these days, but actually discovering photos of the folk art in its original context is almost unheard of! I remember a few years ago seeing a 19th century cabinet card that had a very rare image of a southern face jug on it. It was jaw-dropping to see and I regret not saving a .jpg of it (the piece ended up selling for over $ 800.00!).

One of the many projects that I would love to do, but sadly may never get to, would be to produce a book a photos of folk art in their original settings. Who knows? Maybe it will happen some day...

Articulated Figures

One of my favorite categories of American folk art is articulated figures.

These 2 figures just went for $ 2200.00 at the latest Noel Barrett auction. Yes, I got blown out of the water again! The larger piece is technically an artist's model and the smaller figure is a nice example of a limberjack, probably dating from the late 19th century.
