How do we know this isn't circa 1820's? SML

Mostly due to the stylization of the form and the patina of the surface and paint, it's safe to say early 20th century but not any earlier.

I'm always leary about dating objects based upon patina. Patina is only an indication as to how something was cared for, not it's age. Tool marks and materials is perhaps a better indicator...but granted, sometimes we don't have those elements to guide us.

I agree it's an inexact science. I think experience is always going to be your best asset, but even that fails on occasion.
