Portrait Bust

Circa 1930's folk art carved portrait bust of a woman. A wonderful wood grain pattern makes for a compelling sculpture.

Folk Art Woman's Head Cane

19th century folk art cane with a woman's head. Very rare to find a woman's head on a cane as women were more typically depicted in unflattering poses as objects of desire. Found in southern PA.

Available at Anonymous Works.

Early Folk Art Carved Plaque of a Nude Woman

Available here. Update: Sold for $492.09.

A loyal reader just informed me that this folk carving is based on the original painting "September Morn" by Paul Emile Chabas in 1912. It was displayed in a window of an art gallery in Chicago and the owner of the art gallery was charged with indecency. The resulting court case, which the artist won, made the painting famous. It's now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Thanks Diane!

Early 20th Century Folk Art Carved Portrait Figure of a Woman

I like how this seems to be a portrait carving of a specific woman, but it also remains charmingly naive.
