Timothy Chandler and His Toy Horn

Auction house description:
East Tennessee folk art portrait of young boy holding a toy horn, with a small black dog at his feet. Watercolor and pencil on lightly lined paper with writing en verso: "Timothy Chandler born 1820 Boyd's Creek Tennessee." Old, but not original grain painted frame. Condition: minor discoloration, paper has been trimmed on one side to fit into frame. Sight: 8-1/4" W x 15" H, framed: 10-1/4" W x 17" H. Lot is accompanied by a copper toy horn (6-1/2"), by oral history the same horn depicted in the painting. Provenance: the subject, Timothy Chandler (1820-1888), was the son of John Chandler and grandson of Timothy Chandler (founder of Sevierville,TN, owner of Wheatlands Plantation). He is buried in Boyd's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Purchased by consignor from descendants of the family. Provenance: Nashville, TN Collection. (2 items)
