A loyal reader just informed me that this folk carving is based on the original painting "September Morn" by Paul Emile Chabas in 1912. It was displayed in a window of an art gallery in Chicago and the owner of the art gallery was charged with indecency. The resulting court case, which the artist won, made the painting famous. It's now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Thanks Diane!
