Vintage Photos of TV Shows on Air

You see these every once and a while and usually they are shots of historic moments...Kennedy's inauguration or funeral, the Moon landing, etc.

What gets me is when you find the more random shots of everyday shows. I particularly like the shot of the disgruntled TV spaceman in front of the little boy!

Rare Daguerreotype of a Sick Child

I've seen many post mortem images of children from the 19th century, but this is the first time I've seen one of a sick child. Incredibly haunting and poetic.

Available at Greg French Early Photography.

"Take Me to The Water: Immersion Baptism in Vintage Music and Photography 1890-1950"

Many readers of this blog will no doubt be familiar with Jim Linderman, collector, historian, blogger and now, author. His new book, "Take Me to The Water: Immersion Baptism in Vintage Music and Photography 1890-1950" is scheduled for release on May 26th and will instantly become the definitive volume on the subject. It features 75 reproductions of old photographs collected by Linderman as well as being accompanied by a CD of rare gospel and folk recordings that make for a terrific backdrop as you read this book.

The book continues a tradition of archiving the culture of old America, the one that exists now mostly through old 78 rpm recordings and vintage photographs.

Special mention has to be made to the publisher of this book, Dust-to-Digital, whose other titles include "I Belong to This Band: 85 Years of Sacred Harp Recordings" and "Melodii Tuvi: Throat Songs and Folk Tunes from Tuva" (you gotta love these guys!). Their artistic approach to the production of these sets make them much more like cultural artifacts rather than simple books and CDs. They are THAT good!

Early 1960's Marvel Super Hero Club Buttons

I started collecting comic books in the mid-1970's when I was a kid. I still remember my first comic book was Superman vs. Swamp Thing, a DC comic, but I quickly wised up and converted to Marvel.

The collecting bug was in me even then and I started to go to the monthly comic book convention at the old Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. These were held monthly and I started getting into the old Silver Age comics like early X-Men, Daredevil, Iron Man, etc...

One thing that always intrigued me about these old comics were some of the early Marvel promotional merchandise that were advertised on the back pages. I think there were iron-on patches and definitely sweatshirts that you could buy with your favorite Marvel superhero.

Well, if you're like me and totally missed the early 1960's, here's a nice collection of Marvel Super Hero Club buttons. Worth a bit more than $.39 now.
